FLAG
This project is inspired on the famous piece of Jasper Johns, "Flag".
My intention was to use the flag as a reference, adapting this piece of art to the current context of social, economic and energetic global crisis and putting that in relation with the events that happened in the USA during the last decade.
But why the last decade?
Because I think we all agree that September 11 marked a before and after in U.S. history. the last decade is marked by this event. And other events that happened in the United States are closely related to the catalytic event, the terrorist attack to the twin towers.
Why am I using the American flag?
Because the flag of a country represents its traditions, ideologies and beliefs.
I wanted to use the American flag as a canvas to create a piece of "protest art", putting in the flag a collage of pictures that represents for me the ideologies and beliefs of the USA and that, in some way, have relation with many negative events in the last decade (Irak war, Enron and Madoff scandals...) and that have darken the United States image, represented by the american flag.
I think events an ideologies are strongly related (oil crisis and Irak war, outrageous capitalism, Madoff and Enron scandals...), so putting it all together in a collage I wanted to communicate this interconnection. All that cannot be well understood alone but make sense all together like pieces of a puzzle.
